Ethan

Longmont Manufacturing Warehouse

Longmont, Colorado

Day 4

Ethan was awakened by the sun shining through the warehouse door they’d left cracked open for ventilation. Tank noticed him stir, padded over, and plopped down next to him on top of the camping quilt. The dog began to bite and pull at the bandages on his paws in an attempt to remove them. With a yawn, Ethan stretched and reached out to stop him, but the bitter-cold air against his bare arm prompted him to pull it back inside quickly. He watched his breath freeze as he exhaled.

“I’ll treat his paws again before we leave today,” Brooke whispered, scooting closer to spoon with Ethan.

One-by-one, the others began to stir, too. Pammy unzipped her sleeping bag and slipped out, fully clothed. Shayne pulled the bag closed again and pulled his head inside as Pammy began to quietly load more broken-down cardboard boxes and broken pieces of furniture into the fifty-five-gallon drum they had used for a firepit.

Grant unzipped his sleeping bag and stood watching Pammy. He glanced at her sleeping bag with Shayne inside and said, “I wish I’d have thought of that.”

“What?” Pammy said.

“Putting layers of cardboard between my bag and the floor. My bones are cold.”

“I think it helped.”

“It may have helped, but the thing that saved me from freezing last night was the Pammy furnace in here with me,” Shayne said from inside Pammy’s sleeping bag.

“Don’t get used to it, buster. We’re going to get you your own sleeping bag as soon as we can find one today,” Pammy said, poking the fire with a piece of rebar.

“What’s for breakfast?” Steve asked, rolling over to face the burn barrel.

“Yeah, I’m starved,” Shayne said.

“Anyone bring any eggs or bacon?” Pammy asked jokingly.

“How about pancakes?” Shayne said, throwing open Pammy’s sleeping bag and feeling around on the floor with his hands.

“Dude, you were in there with me naked?” Pammy exclaimed, noticing Shayne in his boxers. Several large purple bruises were visible on his back.

Finding his pants, Shayne stuck one leg inside and said, “I’m not naked!”

“Pretty damn close!” Pammy glared, her hands on her hips.

“Hey, everyone knows the less clothing you’re wearing, the better—for heat distribution,” Shayne said through a yawn.

Ethan grinned. “That’s what they say.”

“Yeah,” Steve said with a lopsided smile.

Pammy crossed her arms over her chest. “Well, why am I the last to know?”

“I didn’t want to push my luck and talk to you about it last night for obvious reasons,” Shayne said.

“What obvious reasons?” Pammy asked.

“He probably didn’t want to risk freezing his balls off if you decided not to accommodate him in your sleeping bag,” Steve offered.

Kelly backhanded him on the arm. “Why don’t you mind your own business.”

Brooke held up the med kit. “We’re out of gauze.”

“When we head out for Denver today, everybody keep your eyes out for more gauze for Tank and supplies for the first aid kit. Also, somewhere we can get gear and a backpack for Shayne.” Ethan glanced over at Pammy. “I guess you don’t need a bike now.
